In April 2015, Jordi Tosas, the rest of the team and I were ready to start an expedition in the Himalayas, a few days before a devastating earthquake shook the area. We decided not to change the plans and to travel there to help with everything necessary.
What actions did you take in Langtang to help the valley after the earthquake?
"Together with Jordi Tosas we first carried out actions to identify the disappeared people, since in the Langtang valley the earthquake buried some 600 people under rock avalanches. We also went to far villages from mountain regions such as Ganesh and Tamang to bring essential goods, collaborating with the NGO ACTED"
"In addition, through the Langtang movie we did about our experience, we collected money together with the NGO SOS Himalaya-Iñaki Ochoa de Olza to rebuild more than one hundred houses for all those people who had lost everything"
How did you know exactly what Langtang needed?
"We knew that it was a place very affected by the earthquake, Jordi had a very special connection with it and it was a place where rescue teams were not arriving yet"
"The monsoon season was starting and it was very important to work very quickly to prevent people from leaving the area. Other NGOs were focused on delivering food and medicine. We realised that there was an important need for building new houses and we decided to focus all our efforts into that"
How can we help in situations like this?
"In many ways, helping with the knowledge or skills of each one or collaborating with NGOs and Foundations that work in the area or making donations to them"
"It is very important to understand the problems that exist. And what are the needs that this problem generates. From there, look for the organizations that are on the ground and collaborate with them, financially or with our work. On the other hand, you can start an independent campaign focused on a specific problem. For example, a very important help for the Langtang was the revival of tourism. By traveling there we were helping, both financial and psychological"
